Indian Badminton Teams Triumph at Asian Championships: Women Upset China, Men Defeat Hong Kong

New Delhi, 15 February: The Indian badminton teams delivered dominant performances on Wednesday, securing their places in the quarterfinals of the Badminton Asia Team Championships. The women’s team achieved a historic feat, defeating badminton powerhouse China for the first time in a team event, while the men’s team comfortably overcame Hong Kong.
Led by two-time Olympic medalist PV Sindhu, the Indian women’s team stunned China with a thrilling 3-2 victory. Sindhu, returning from injury, set the tone with a commanding win, while 17-year-old Anmol Kharab delivered a clutch performance in the deciding match. Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand also played a pivotal role with a crucial doubles win after a first-game loss.

The Indian men’s team had a smoother ride, defeating Hong Kong 4-1. Despite an opening singles loss by HS Prannoy, Satwiksairaj Rankireddy-Chirag Shetty’s doubles win sparked a dominant run. Lakshya Sen and doubles pair Arjun MR-Kapila continued the momentum to secure the top-two position in their group.

“It’s a special feeling to see the team beat China. We showed faith in the youngsters, and they delivered!” said Badminton Association of India General Secretary Sanjay Mishra. Both teams’ progress to the quarterfinals, with the men facing China to decide the group winners. This historic success highlights the depth and talent in Indian badminton, with both young and experienced players rising to the occasion.
