Love Marriage Sparks Violence: Mother Humiliated in Tarn Taran
Tarn Taran, Punjab: A woman in Tarn Taran, Punjab, has accused her son’s relatives of harassing and humiliating her after her son married a girl he loved. The incident, which has sparked outrage, involved the mother being paraded through the streets half-naked.
According to the victim’s complaint, her son had a court-sanctioned marriage with a local girl. On March 31st, around 6 pm, a group of five individuals, including Sharanjit Singh (alias Sunny), Gurcharan Singh, Kulwinder Kaur (alias Mani), and two unidentified men, arrived at her house and began creating a scene.
When the commotion drew her outside, the accused allegedly surrounded her, verbally abusing her regarding the court marriage. They then proceeded to tear her clothes, leaving her half-naked, and then paraded her through the streets. Despite her screams for help, bystanders reportedly offered no assistance.
The ordeal continued with the accused filming the incident and later posting the video on social media. The victim has accused the police of inaction, stating that despite filing a complaint on the night of the incident, no steps were taken until April 4th.
The Tarn Taran Police have registered a case against the identified accused Sharanjit Singh, Gurcharan Singh, and Kulwinder Kaur along with two unidentified individuals. Raids are reportedly underway to apprehend the accused.
The Women’s Commission has also intervened, demanding a report from the police on the actions taken in the matter. This incident highlights the ongoing social issues surrounding love marriages in certain parts of India. The public humiliation faced by the victim raises serious concerns about the safety and security of individuals who choose to marry outside their community or caste.
