White House Celebration Includes Golgappas: A Taste of India

President Joe Biden’s Rose Garden reception at the White House on Monday featured golgappas, a popular Indian street food enjoyed by foreign guests.

The inclusion of golgappas at this event signifies a new culinary addition to White House programs, delighting Asian-Americans and Indian-Americans in attendance. Golgappas were also served twice last year, expanding the menu diversity of White House gatherings. Previously, only samosas were offered at the Vice House, but this year golgappas were introduced.

The reception commemorated the 25th anniversary of the White House Initiative and the President’s Advisory Commission on Asian Americans, Native Hawaiians, and Pacific Islanders. Ajay Jain Bhutoria, a prominent Indian-American community leader, shared several behind-the-scenes videos of the event on social media.

Reflecting on the experience, Bhutoria remarked, “Last year, golgappas were also served when I attended. This year, I was pleasantly surprised when a server brought golgappas to me. They were delightful, with a refreshing tangy taste.”

During the reception, Bhutoria spoke with White House Executive Chef Christetta Comerford about golgappas. “I asked her if golgappas were made at the White House,” Bhutoria recalled. “She confirmed that they prepare everything here.”

Bhutoria also mentioned another Indian delicacy on the menu, “khoya,” describing it as a sweet dish made from khoya.
