Virat Kohli Fined for IPL Code of Conduct Breach in Match against KKR
Royal Challengers Bangalore (RCB) skipper Virat Kohli found himself in the spotlight during the recent Indian Premier League (IPL) clash against Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) at Eden Gardens, where his team suffered a narrow one-run defeat. The match, which took place on Sunday, saw Kohli fined 50% of his match fee for breaching the IPL’s Code of Conduct.
The incident occurred amidst a backdrop of RCB’s challenging season, marked by a seventh defeat in eight matches during the IPL 2024 campaign. Kohli’s contentious moment emerged during a pivotal phase of the game, accentuating the drama of the encounter.
During his batting stint against KKR, Kohli’s dismissal triggered controversy, with the RCB captain expressing dismay over the third umpire’s decision. KKR had set a formidable target of 223 runs, and Kohli, alongside Faf du Plessis, began the chase with explosive intent. However, Kohli’s innings was cut short in the third over when he fell victim to Harshit Rana’s bowling.
The critical moment unfolded when Kohli attempted to maneuver a full toss from Harshit, aiming to turn the ball towards the on-side. Instead, the ball caught the inside edge of Kohli’s bat, landing directly into Harshit’s hands. Kohli promptly opted for a review, contending that the delivery was above waist height and should have been deemed a no-ball.
Disappointment struck Kohli as the third umpire upheld the on-field decision, ruling him out based on the Hawk-Eye system’s analysis, which also indicated Kohli had stepped out of his crease. This decision sparked Kohli’s frustration, which spilled over into the post-match repercussions.
In response to the incident, the IPL issued a statement confirming Kohli’s 50% match fee fine for breaching the tournament’s Code of Conduct during the KKR encounter. The league identified Kohli’s actions as a Level 1 offence under Article 2.8, which pertains to minimum over-rate offences.
Acknowledging the breach, Kohli admitted to the offence and accepted the sanction proposed by the match referee. The episode underscores the intensity and scrutiny that accompany high-stakes IPL contests, where players and officials navigate a fine balance between competitive spirit and adherence to regulations.
