Faridabad, 20 February: Two iconic Delhi restaurants, Moti Mahal and Daryaganj, are fighting over the rightful claim to inventing butter chicken and dal makhani, two beloved Indian dishes. The Delhi High Court is embroiled in this fascinating legal battle, ready to settle the culinary dispute once and for all.
Moti Mahal is taking Daryaganj to court, alleging that their tagline “Inventors of Butter Chicken and Dal Makhani” is misleading and implies a connection that doesn’t exist. The court, under Justice Sanjeev Narula, has asked Daryaganj to respond within a month and temporarily banned them from using the disputed tagline.
This feud has been bubbling for years, with each restaurant attributing the creations to different individuals. Moti Mahal claims their ancestor, Kundan Lal Gujral, the “inventor of tandoori chicken,” brought these dishes to life after the partition. They believe he cleverly used leftover chicken and butter to create the now-famous sauce, later extending the innovation to dal makhani.
Daryaganj, however, hasn’t publicly commented on the lawsuit, but reports suggest their lawyers dismiss these claims. This courtroom drama promises to shed light on the true origins of these cherished dishes, leaving foodies across the world eagerly awaiting the final verdict!
