Defending Olympic champion Neeraj Chopra showcased his dominance on Tuesday, securing a spot in the men’s javelin throw final at the Paris 2024 Olympics. With a colossal 89.34m effort on his very first attempt, the Indian star effortlessly surpassed the qualification standard of 84m. This remarkable throw is the second-best of his illustrious career.

Unfazed by the pressure, Chopra remained grounded. “It was a good throw,” he stated, acknowledging the significance of the achievement. “Maybe the biggest ever in qualifying for me. The competition looks tough, but I’m excited for the final.” The 26-year-old, who holds the national record of 89.94m set in 2022, continues his pursuit of perfection. “I believe I haven’t reached my peak yet,” he expressed. “There’s room for improvement in both technique and distance.

Chopra’s qualification round performance was also his season’s best, surpassing his previous mark of 88.36m from the Doha Diamond League. With the final scheduled for August 8 at the same venue, expectations are high for the Indian ace.

The road to gold won’t be easy. Germany’s Julian Weber, who also qualified with a strong 87.76m throw, poses a significant threat. Grenada’s two-time world champion Anderson Peters, with an impressive 88.63m, is another formidable contender. Additionally, Czechia’s Jakub Vadlejch, who narrowly defeated Chopra in Doha, will be vying for a podium finish.

As Neeraj Chopra steps into the final, the nation eagerly anticipates another golden moment for Indian athletics.
