Keir Starmer Becomes UK’s New Prime Minister Following Historic Labour Party Victory
The results of Britain’s general election on July 4 were announced today, revealing a historic victory for the Labour Party. The party secured 400 seats, with leader Keir Starmer now set to become the new prime minister. After arriving at Buckingham Palace, King Charles III asked Starmer to take on the role, making his position official.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi congratulated Starmer on his party’s triumph, expressing his anticipation for strengthening the India-UK Comprehensive Strategic Partnership. “Heartiest congratulations and best wishes to Keir Starmer on his remarkable victory in the UK general election,” Modi tweeted. “I look forward to our positive and constructive cooperation to further strengthen the India-UK Comprehensive Strategic Partnership across all sectors, promoting mutual growth and prosperity.” Modi also praised outgoing Prime Minister Rishi Sunak, thanking him for his leadership and contributions to India-UK relations, and wishing him and his family well.
In his victory speech after winning the Holborn and St Pancras seats, Starmer expressed gratitude to the voters, emphasizing their desire for change and a move away from superficial politics. “Whether people voted for me or not, I will serve every person in this constituency,” the 61-year-old Starmer stated. “I will speak for you, I will support you, I will fight your battles every day. Now is the time for us to do our work.” Meanwhile, Rishi Sunak won the Richmond seat.
