Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) Rules Come into Effect

New Delhi: The Union government on Monday evening issued a notification regarding the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA), bringing its rules into effect. A portal has also been prepared through which non-Muslim migrant communities can apply for citizenship. The Union Home Ministry has made all the necessary preparations for this.

A few days ago, the Union Home Ministry had received another extension from the Parliamentary Committee on Subordinate Legislation in the Lok Sabha to prepare the rules for the Citizenship Amendment Act, 2019. The earlier extension period had ended on January 9. This was the seventh extension granted to the Home Ministry to prepare the CAA rules. Earlier, the Rajya Sabha had also granted the Home Ministry a six-month extension to frame and implement rules on the subject.

Application Process

Under the CAA rules, applications will be invited through an online portal. The work for this process has been completed. Under the rules of the Citizenship Amendment Act, the rules for obtaining Indian citizenship will be made easier for non-Muslim migrants from India’s three Muslim-majority neighboring countries, including Pakistan, Bangladesh, and Afghanistan. These six communities include Hindus, Christians, Sikhs, Jains, Buddhists, and Parsis.
