Burhanpur Traffic Police: Aiming for Change, Apology Letters Replace Challans
Traffic police in Burhanpur, Madhya Pradesh, have adopted a unique method to deter motorists from driving on the wrong side of the road. Instead of issuing fines, the police are asking offenders to write apology letters. This approach aims to raise awareness of traffic rules and the consequences of breaking them.
According to media reports, a man named Varun Patil was caught riding his bike on the wrong side of the road with his wife as a pillion rider. Interestingly, neither of them was wearing helmets; Mr. Patil had a thin towel wrapped around his head instead. The traffic police could have simply issued a challan, but they opted for a different approach.
Instead of demanding a fine, the police officers asked Mr. Patil to write an apology letter. This apology letter wasn’t your typical note either. As a way to ensure he wouldn’t forget the lesson, Mr. Patil had to write “I will not ride the bike on the wrong side” a whopping 100 times. Patil acknowledged his mistake and promised to share this experience with 10-20 friends and family members, urging them to follow traffic rules.
This initiative, which began on April 2nd, has seen positive results. According to the traffic police, around 30 people have been caught riding on the wrong side by April 5th, and all of them were made to write apology letters. Bystanders who witnessed this unusual punishment reportedly approved of the method.
The Burhanpur traffic police‘s creative approach demonstrates a shift towards a more consciousness-raising strategy for traffic management. This method not only punishes the offender but also has the potential to create a ripple effect of awareness within the community.
