Savitri Jindal, mother of Kurukshetra BJP MP Naveen Jindal, who had sought a ticket from the party for the upcoming Haryana Assembly elections, filed her nomination as an Independent from the Hisar seat on Thursday. The election for Haryana’s 90 Assembly seats will take place on October 5, with results to be announced on October 8.

On the final day of nominations, 74-year-old Savitri Jindal, wife of the late industrialist O P Jindal, officially entered the race against Haryana Minister and sitting Hisar MLA Kamal Gupta. This year, Forbes India ranked her as the country’s richest woman, with a net worth of USD 29.1 billion.

After filing her nomination, Jindal said, “I am committed to serving Hisar for its progress and growth. The people of Hisar are my family, a bond established by Om Prakash Jindal.” She added, “The Jindal family has always worked for Hisar. I am fully dedicated to meeting the people’s expectations and maintaining their trust.”

When asked about her decision to run against the BJP after the party nominated Kamal Gupta, Jindal clarified, “This will not be seen as rebellion. I only campaigned for my son (Naveen Jindal) during the Lok Sabha elections. I have not taken BJP membership.”

Savitri Jindal has previously represented Hisar in the Haryana Assembly, first elected as a Congress MLA in 2005. She won again in 2009 and became a minister in the Bhupinder Singh Hooda government in 2013. In March this year, she left the Congress along with her son, Naveen Jindal, who later joined the BJP.
