Kolkata Police Crack Doctor’s Murder Case, Thanks to a Torn Bluetooth Earphone
The Kolkata police have successfully identified and arrested a suspect in the horrific sexual assault and murder of a woman postgraduate trainee doctor at the state-run RG Kar Medical College and Hospital, thanks to a torn Bluetooth earphone.
The suspect, Sanjay Roy, was not a hospital employee but had access to various departments due to his role as a civic volunteer with the police welfare board. Roy’s suspicious behavior had already drawn attention, and sources revealed that he had a history of inappropriate conduct towards women within the hospital.
The torn Bluetooth earphone played a crucial role in leading the police to Roy. CCTV footage showed him wearing the earphones as he entered the hospital, but they were missing when he left. Investigators later found a torn part of the earphone, which they connected to Roy, helping them solve the case. Other postgraduate trainees and female doctors also identified Roy from CCTV footage captured across the hospital.
The semi-nude body of the woman doctor, who was in her second year of postgraduate studies in the chest medicine department, was discovered in the hospital’s seminar hall on Friday. She had been on duty the previous night, and her body bore multiple injury marks. The preliminary autopsy report suggested that she had been sexually assaulted before being murdered, leading her father to allege that she was raped and killed inside the hospital.
Following the discovery of the body, the police set up a command center at the college, equipped with 15 laptops, to meticulously analyze CCTV footage hour by hour. Initial findings suggested that the crime took place between 4 a.m. and 6 a.m., four hours after the victim had dinner. During their investigation, officers noted Roy’s entry into the hospital around 4 a.m., and upon closely reviewing the footage, they observed that he left the hospital without his earphones.
Police also interviewed doctors and nurses on duty at the time, gathering testimonies to establish Roy’s presence at the scene. A broken Bluetooth earphone found at the crime scene further strengthened the case against him. During interrogation, Roy showed signs of distress and eventually confessed to the crime.
In response to the incident at RG Kar, Kolkata Police Commissioner Vineet Goyal issued a special advisory highlighting the need for enhanced safety measures for women in government hospitals. The advisory calls for identifying high-risk areas, increasing police presence, and installing CCTV cameras with the help of private entities. It also emphasizes the importance of involving more female officers to address safety concerns effectively.
The incident has sparked outrage within the medical community, prompting junior doctors and medical staff across West Bengal to stage protests demanding better security and accountability for the accused.
