Roots and Escalation of the Protests

The protests were initially sparked by opposition to a controversial job reservation system favoring families of 1971 war veterans but have since morphed into a broader anti-government movement. Despite the government’s attempt to quell the protests with a nationwide curfew and calls for dialogue, the demonstrators have continued their push, leading to widespread violence and destruction across 39 districts.

The situation remains tense, with the government enforcing an indefinite curfew from 6 pm Sunday to restore order. The protests have drawn support from various societal sectors, including celebrities, who have helped amplify the movement through social media. The resignation of Sheikh Hasina marks a significant shift in the country’s political landscape, with the military now stepping in to lead the nation temporarily.
