Over 100 Killed in Stampede at Religious Event in Hathras
At least 120 people, including women and children, died tragically in a stampede during a religious gathering in Hathras, Uttar Pradesh on Tuesday.
The incident unfolded during a crowded “satsang” (prayer meeting). Visuals from the scene depict heart-wrenching images of bodies being transported to the Community Health Centre in buses and tempos, surrounded by grieving relatives.
Following the tragedy, Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath established a committee to investigate the cause. Prime Minister Narendra Modi and President Droupadi Murmu expressed condolences to the bereaved families and well-wishes for the injured. The Prime Minister assured full support from the Central government to Uttar Pradesh in this time of need.
According to Hathras District Magistrate Ashish Kumar, initial reports from the health center suggested 50-60 fatalities. Officials in Etah confirmed an additional 27 deaths.
“The stampede occurred in Phulrai village under Sikandra Rao police station. The injured are receiving treatment at local hospitals. While security arrangements were implemented by the administration, organizers were responsible for other logistical aspects of the private event,” informed Mr. Kumar.
Chief Medical Officer of Etah, Dr. Umesh Kumar Tripathi, revealed they received 27 bodies, primarily women (25) with two males. Reports suggest a stampede erupted during the “satsang.” Senior Superintendent of Police, Etah, Rajesh Kumar, confirmed the deaths of three children in the incident.
An attendee of the “satsang,” organized in honor of local guru Bhole Baba (Narayan Saakar Hari), described the stampede occurring as the large crowd dispersed.
The authorities announced a compensation of Rs. 2 lakh each for the families of the deceased and Rs. 50,000 for the injured. Additionally, a case will be registered against the event organizers.
