Bengaluru Breaks 133-Year Rainfall Record with 111mm Downpour

On June 2, Bengaluru experienced its wettest day of the month in history as thundershowers continued in the tech city with the arrival of the Southwest Monsoon in Karnataka. Observatories of the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) recorded a rainfall of 111mm till 11:30pm on Sunday, which broke the record of 101.6mm for a single-day rainfall set 133 years ago on June 16, 1891.

The weather department has issued a yellow alert for the city, with a prediction of cloudy sky and a few spells of rain or thundershowers between June 3 and 5. The maximum temperature in these three days is likely to hover between 31 and 32 degrees Celsius, while the lowest is likely to stay around 20-21 degrees Celsius. 

According to Karnataka Weather, light to moderate rain with isolated heavy thunderstorms are likely to continue in the state.

“Widespread light to moderate rain with isolated heavy thunderstorms are likely to continue over interiors of Karnataka including Bengaluru city today too. Central and north interior Karnataka districts are likely to witness very good thunderstorms today,” it said. 

A report said the state capital has completed its share of monthly rainfall as the city has reported over 120mm of rainfall in the past two days in June. The average rainfall for the reported month is 110.3mm, according to the report. In Bengaluru, Hampi Nagar received the highest rainfall of 110.5mm, followed by Maruti Mandira ward at 89.5mm, Vidyapeetha at 88.50mm, and Cottonpet at 87.50mm.
