Mercury Soars: 15 Indian States in the Grip of Brutal Heatwave
A sweltering heatwave has descended upon much of India, impacting at least 15 states across the eastern, central, and southern regions. This scorching heat, with the exception of the northernmost states of Jammu and Kashmir, Himachal Pradesh, and Uttarakhand, is causing immense discomfort for millions of people.
The intensity of the heatwave is evident from the early morning hours, with temperatures starting to climb as early as 10 am. Many locations in these affected states, including parts of Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Chhattisgarh, Maharashtra, Bihar, and Odisha, have been witnessing maximum temperatures hovering around a staggering 42-45 degrees Celsius. This relentless heat poses a significant health risk, especially for vulnerable populations like the elderly and young children.
However, there’s a glimmer of hope. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) predicts a slight respite in the coming days, with a potential drop in maximum temperatures by 2-3 degrees Celsius. This temporary relief will be a welcome change for those battling the scorching conditions.
The long-term forecast, however, paints a concerning picture. The IMD anticipates that several states may experience heatwave conditions for extended periods, potentially lasting up to 20 days between April and June. This prolonged heatwave could disrupt daily life, impacting agricultural productivity, labor conditions, and overall public health.
Areas expected to bear the brunt of this extended heatwave include parts of Uttar Pradesh, West Bengal, Rayalaseema region in Andhra Pradesh, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Vidarbha and Marathwada regions of Maharashtra, Telangana, and Odisha. The IMD predicts that these regions will continue to see maximum temperatures hovering around a punishing 42-44 degrees Celsius over the next five days.
Authorities in these affected states are likely to issue heat advisories and implement measures to mitigate the impact of the heatwave. Staying hydrated, avoiding strenuous activity during peak heat hours, and wearing loose, light-colored clothing are some crucial steps individuals can take to protect themselves from the scorching temperatures.
